How to dress when exercising
While on the surface the clothes you wear when exercising may not seem very important - it actually is very
important!
Shoes - You should wear good quality shoes to exercise in, such as cross-training shoes - not sandals or other
casual wear shoes. In general wear the type of shoe that is appropriate for the type of activity you will be doing.
For example: buy good hiking boots for hiking; walking shoes for walking; running shoes for running, etc. If
you are engaging in many different types of exercise cross-training shoes may be ok too. Just remember if you start
spending a large amount of time in a specific activity or sport - get the right shoes.
And don't be tight with your money when buying shoes. Feet are important - ask any podiatrist or person
with severe foot problems - it just isn't worth it to take a chance of injuring your feet. Expect to pay
anywhere from $45 to $80. It will be worth the money!
Socks - Good clean socks are important too! Make sure they are thick and absorbent.
Good socks will help keep you from developing blisters and other problems. Some places even sell different types
of socks for different sports. So if you will be spending a lot of time in one sport or activity, buy the right
socks for it.
But don't worry -
good socks won't cost you nearly as much as good shoes!
Shorts - You should wear clothes that you can move around freely in, not jeans or similar clothes.
For most home exercise shorts should be fine, but there are exceptions for some types of indoor exercise. And
of course for outdoors exercise, it will depend upon the temperature outside!
Earrings - The type of jewelry you wear when exercising can also be important. Especially earrings.
Long, dangling earrings are not a good idea when exercising. Something smaller like
diamond stud earrings
or
black pearl earrings
would be more appropriate. Also, you should be careful with long necklaces especially if you will be bending over
a lot. Even rings could catch on something, so be careful and think ahead about what kind of jewelry you wear, if any,
while exercising.
Hats, gloves, etc. - If you will be exercising outside in the sun you may need to consider a hat or sunglasses
to protect your eyes from the sun. Or the cold. For bicycling you should wear a bicycle helmut.
Some people wear gloves when weight lifting also. This can help prevent callouses. Gloves can also make it easier to
grip the weights.
In summary wear clothing appropriate for the activity you will be engaging in. Don't be afraid to spend a little
more money as the right clothing will help protect you from injury as well as make you more comfortable while
exercising. It will also likely help to keep you in the habit of exercising!
